Are you a leader or a manager?
I just got back from a leadership conference whereby we talked about the difference between a manager and a leader. Some would say it is the same thing. And some would say they are two different roles. Well, I learned differently.
The manager is one who oversees people, assigns tasks and ensures those tasks are completed accurately and timely. A manager manages people.
A leader is someone who sets the vision, defines the high level strategy and trains other leaders how to lead. A leader empowers others to manage.
Which one am I? I thought I was a leader yet I find myself caught up in the details on some days. On other days, I find myself developing the vision and strategy, thus empowering others to do their jobs. I then had to ask again, but which am I?
What I learned is that I am both. Both roles co-exist in each of us and should co-exist. I need to be able to set the vision and strategy as well as oversee my people and assign tasks. There are some days where there are fires to put out but there are other days when I need to mentor and teach someone how to lead.
The next question I had is whether leadership is a genetic trait or can we learn it? Are we born leaders or trained in school how to become leaders? What is interesting again is both answers are true. There are some ‘born leaders’ and there are others that are trained to lead.
So then how can I help my clients (and you) to manage and lead simultaneously? Removing obstacles and clearing the space you need to success. Many times these mental barriers or past hurts keep us in our safe zone but also keep us stuck. These can be removed through acknowledging, grieving what could have been, and accepting what wasn’t but what can be. In short, letting go of what didn’t occur in the past but has been highly anticipated that it would occur and once it did, things would be perfect! It is time to let that go. There is no normal and no perfect. But it is time to accept who you are and how you became the person you are today—in spite of those past obstacles. Lets work together to remove those obstacles holding you back, and allow for space and movement in the brain to create, pursue and lead!
